A Window to the Past

VIDEOGAME DEVELOPMENT  /  VIRTUAL REALITY  /  URBAN INTERVENTION  /  GRADE THESIS

With my thesis partner Sebastián Vásquez, we wanted to design from the scratch a virtual reality system that could help to resolve a real world problematic. With this in mind we focused our project to resolve a latent problematic that grows everyday in our city. This problematic is the loss and ignorance of the historical memory of our city, Cali. Although Cali doesn’t have a wide history, the local people don’t know anything besides that Cali is a city where you can have great parties and eat amazing food. Because of this, they communicate the same idea to all the tourists that come to the city. Thus, the history of the city is dying with the passing of the days. Having this in mind, we started to think about a way to teach both locals and tourist about the history of this amazing city. We decided that the best way to do this was with an interactive experience that lets the user learn by doing.

Here is when the idea of Chronoscope is born, a pervasive game that mixes the reality with the digital world, where you can learn about history while you feel and see the present. In this way, the people can relate the historical facts with the place that they are actually seeing and this experience let them learn in a more deeper way.

As soon the user downloads and opens the application, he will receive a welcoming message and a small tutorial about how Chronoscope works. In this tutorial the jocular guide that is the personification of the famous Jovita Freijóo explain each of the modules from the main menu. In this menu the user can check the map where he will find access points to the virtual reality content in the same location of historical landmarks of Cali. The user also can check his progress and unlock items that will have additional information of those landmarks. Finally, the user can modify the settings of the game, such as subtitles, language and more. Once the user is in a historical landmark, he will find there a commemorative plate with a logo of that place. The user needs to scan this logo to access the virtual reality content of the place, a Google Cardboard is needed if the user want to take the virtual reality experience, but the application also offers a wide screen mode so anyone can access to the content. The content shown to the user consist of Jovita telling him the history of the place and proposing him to play a mini game that is related to the story already told. Every time the user completes the mini game of any of the places, he receives a gem. Once he had encounter all the gems, Jovita guides him to the last place (in this case the mountain of San Antonio) where the game concludes with the true secret of what makes Cali so special. Also, after the user complete a stage, he can play it wherever he wants.

Make It Simple

UI/UX DESIGNER  /  UNITY DEVELOPER  /  MOTION GRAPHICS  /  WRITER  /  RESEARCHER

My role in the project was mainly the design of the interface and the user experience through the app. I designed it to be the easy to use and clear with the information that it communicates. With this in mind, the icons are easy to understand, the transitions between menus are clean and the buttons are easy to recognize and press. I used a not so saturated palette of color so it will be more comfortable at sight. The aesthetics of the whole interface are thinked to evoque a feeling of yesteryear in the user, making him clear that the game was about a historical topic.

I also wrote the script for the whole narration that Jovita does across the game, which behind the historical facts, it carries an emotive message about the happiness of Cali, which resides in its habitants, the ones that spread their energy, joy, empathy and beautiness in this “branch of heaven”.
