The Luminous Loop

URBAN INTERVENTION  /  INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION

As part of the KM3 event held in commemoration of the 124th birthday of Montreal, Alexandre Castonguay was invited to realize an urban intervention in the "Grande Bibliothèque", the biggest library of Quebec located in the downtown of Montreal. The "Roue de Vélo" urban intervention proposed by Alexandre consisted in a 2 part installation. The first part was an enormous wheel made of bike wheels that the participants to the event will move riding static bikes near the Roue de Vélo. The second part was a massive projection made over the walls of the library, its dimensions being 40 meters of width per 20 meters of height.

The projection on the walls of the library consisted of an interactive board, in which the words written by the participants in a web page will accumulate and slowly disappear with the time as a palimpsest. The words sent by the participants to the art installation are stored in memory and added to the already selected word bank by the participants of the many AgitPOV workshops that Alexandre has made across the world in the past few years. With each new word written (after filtering on their contents) the word is added to the board.

Curves and Randomness

DEVELOPER

My role in the team was to define the words behaviour, their movement, their spread ratio, among other programming tasks. The project was made using the Processing's IDE and Java language. The logic behind the app is the following: first, a words bank that is in the project's web page is loaded to the app, at this moment the words start to spread across the canvas in random way, this means that their position, curvature, direction, size and color are defined in a random way. If there is no a new word typed by any user, the words from the words bank will be created indefinitely and fade out whenever there are many of them at full opacity in the canvas. As soon as a new word is typed in the web page by the user, the spread stops and the new typed word is draw in a bigger size and in a color selected by the user, in this way, it is easier to found among the palimpsest. After a few seconds, the spread resumes and the typed word is added to the words bank.

The team behind this projection were conformed by Mariangela Aponte, Daniela Delgado, Sebastián Vásquez and me.
